We all experienced it over the past couple of years and life was changed in multiple ways for all of us. We shifted from working in offices with colleagues to our own space in the house (sometimes shared with another household member).

Whether that’s a room in the house or a cleared-out little corner when all other areas are being utilized, it took some getting used to and adjusting to a new routine of working from home, and we all settled in quite nicely.

Our home offices, however, might be struggling a bit. Makeshift desks were put in place because we thought it would be a temporary office. However, now that most of us are still working from home, there needs to be a more permanent office space that is both functional and pleasing to the eye.

So what can be done to get it where it needs to be? Here are some ideas to get your office catered and working for you.

1 - Rolling Cart for Clutter/Miscellaneous Items

Space on your desk and the surrounding areas are essential when it comes to your office space. If your desk is cluttered with multiple things like staplers, tape dispensers, post-it notes, and different papers, a multiple-tiered rolling cart is an answer to the chaos.

Keep your paperclips and stapler on one tier and your bunches of pens on another. No matter how you fill them, feel good that you have a clear desk but still have what you need within reach or wherever you need it to be within your office.

2 - Floating Wall-Mounted Desk

If you’ve got a small space or even just want more room to move around a wall-mounted desk fold-down desk can give you more area.

We don’t often realize just how much space a standard desk takes up and if you want something you can move out of the way so the room can be used for more than just an office, this is the perfect solution to your home office.

3 - Dividers for Paperwork

Even with technology and the digital age advancing and taking over, some things tend to stick around; one of those things being paperwork. Physical files always seem to be a part of any job and now they’re home with us, piling up on desks or shuffled away in a drawer with no actual organization.

Having a simple “In” and “Out” box might be a classic solution, but if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. It’s amazing just how well this keeps paperwork organized. Adding an extra box for “in progress” paperwork might help even more with streamlining your desk so you know exactly where everything is.

4 - Label Everything

Another standard practice but highly effective one is labeling everything so there’s not only a specific place for work items to go, but so you can quickly grab what you need without hunting it down.

Working efficiently is the key to a productive day, so taking some time to create some simple labels can change how your workflow moves through the day.

5 - Re-Purpose Food Tins and Glass Jars

It’s almost common practice that if you’ve bought any food products that came in a nice tin or glass jar, it’s hard to let some of those go. Most of us tend to store them away to be used at a later time and sometimes those containers are forgotten about.

Maybe now that you have a home office, it’s time to pull those out and use them to contain your pens and pencils, paperclips, and other office supplies in a nice-looking jar.

6 - Creative Ways To Add Storage

Thinking outside the box is one of the best ways to get and keep your workspace organized. Repurposing older pieces into storage and organizing items.

For example, repurposing wooden crates to stack sideways on each other to use as a bookcase for binders and other work-related books. Repurposing an old or used dish drainer can sort your files with minimal effort too. Even bringing in old steamer trunks for storage can double as a side table or sitting place.

If you can look at something in a creative light, the opportunity to organize with that item is tenfold. Plus, thrift stores are chock full of cheap items that can be reused for your organizing goals.
